Wednesday WOW--Fraction Giveaway

Jan 29, 2014

Snow days and cold days (cold, Cold, COLD) have led me to have very few instructional days this month.  But it has given me time to do some thinking, planning, and creating.  I am excited to share what I have been working on for the Wednesday WOW! this week!
I hope you can link up with a WOW moment from your week (personal or professional).

Next week we begin fractions with our little firsties.  I always enjoy teaching this (probably because it is a way to discuss food---and I LOVE food!)  But I wanted to come up with some new ideas...that got me thinking, planning, and creating :)

Here's what I came up:
First up...a Powerpoint to introduce fractions.  It shows real images of where we see objects broken into parts.  There are illustrations to show what a fraction is and what the numbers mean.  There are even some problems where fractions had to be used for the solution. (Here is a sneak peek)

Second up...I needed some differentiated sorts because my students typically are at different levels of understanding.  Once I got started on this...it just kind of snowballed (no surprise, really).  I made several sorts:
whole, half
whole, half, fouths
whole, half, thirds, fourths
equal, unequal
Each sort has several different types of sorting mats, different options of what to sort (really...it snowballed)

I think it could be all the snow days and sitting on the couch...but I am super excited about this set.  I can't wait to use it next week.  Hopefully, it will prove to be as useful as I believe it will be.

Because I am so excited about it...I want to give some away!  So I thought I would throw a little giveaway!  I haven't decided on the number of winners...it will depend on how many entries there are.  The more entries, the more winners!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Just one more WOW for the week: one lost tooth!
Hope you link up your WOW!!

  4. Because I am a "quilter" of sorts, I like to bring in small quilts that I have either made or collected to show my students how fractions are present in the shapes, colors, and patterns in the fabric blocks. I use quilt picture books from my large children's literature collection to extend the lesson, and then have the kids use our pattern block templates to design their own quilt blocks and plan their color ratio (ie; 3 out of 4 blocks are red, 1/2 are blue, etc.). I am actually working on an integrated lesson unit for tPt right now! If you would like a copy, I'd be glad to send it to you when it is done!?

  5. I am starting fractions next week, too! I like to use food of course, but I also use Geometric Quilts throughout the year leading up to this unit. (Reagan Tunstall on TpT I think)

  8. We haven't started Fractions yet, but your powerpoint looks great! :) I'm a little jealous of the snow days… I would like just one! But no such luck for us. :( Glad you've had time to plan and create, though! Hope you're having a great week!

  13. Hi! We covered fractions in the fall, so this would be an excellent review.

  14. I haven't officially taught fractions, but I better get going on it. We take our year end benchmark in February, I know isn't that crazy? They started doing it so the testing grades could see what they need to work on before the test. I really like the powerpoints you use to intro different skills! Your little one looks so proud! She is a cutie!

  15. I like to have a Fraction Fun Day after I have introduced fractions. We bowl and write the fraction of how many pins we knock down. We play basketball and write the fraction of how many shots we made out of 10. The kids really enjoy it and don't even realize that they are learning at the same time!

  16. I love using pizza boxes and then cutting up paper pizza circles for the fractions. The kids then decorate their pizza box. The kids love naming their own Pizza Shop!!

  17. I use graham crackers to teach fractions. I love your fraction product.

  18. Anything with food or candy they seem to love! Make it a real-world problem and it will stick better.

  19. Your powerpoint is great! Students really need to 'see' fractions in action. I like to have them find the fraction of vowels and consonants in their names to help with fractions of a set.
