Family Involvment: Game Nights

Aug 5, 2016

How does family involvement work at your school?  Every school is so different.  It has been interesting to watch the evolution of events since I moved to the Title I position at my school.  Reaching out to families is a component to Title I funding.  My first year as a Title I teacher, my team hosted a family night.  We had 1 attendant.
Flash forward to my 6th year in this position (is that right?)...

It was not the fault of the families that no one came to my first family event.  It was my fault for not being engaging.  I want families in our schools.  I want them to participate, talk, see what we are doing, and help me to be the best educator I can be for their kids.

So this past school year, we did things a bit differently.  First of all, we had the Readbox.  I know I have talked about it a million times.  But it was a great way to be outside every day, talk to families, and get books into the hands of their kids.

But...We also added a Monthly Game Night.

Honestly, we were not sure how this was going to work out.  But we knew that we wanted our students to have more opportunities to problem solve, be critical thinkers, and play.  We thought a Game Night would be a good idea because with the influx of video games, iPhones, etc. Board games just aren't pulled out as often.

But where to start?  What did we want it to look like each month?  How would we get the families to come?

The Games
We started with a schedule.  All the dates were picked and we decided to have a monthly theme.  One month was all about checkers...another month was centered around Pictionary...while another was classic board games.  Here is what our months look like:
September--Puzzles       October--Pictionary    December--Checkers    January--Board Games    March --Math games     April --Create a Game
May --All games
The Food
But games were not the only thing we added to these nights.  We also included food.  Because food always makes things better. :)  Since we are a primary building, we added some alliteration to the food that we served.  Some months it was a full meal and other months it was just a snack.  A few examples: puzzles and pizza; hot chocolate and checkers; pictionary and popcorn; spaghetti and subitizing!

examples of food to be served

 The Decor
Typically when we have big school events, I love to dress the part and decorate the school.  But our game nights were happening every month.  I could not possibly keep up with all that decorating and planning.  So we didn't.  The game nights were simple, to the point.  We had the games and the food.  And you know what...that was just enough!

The Logistics
Invitations were sent home a few times before the night of the event.  For every family that RSVP'd, we put a bracelet reminder on the child the day of the event.  Once the families arrived, they signed in and grabbed the game, and started playing. 15 minutes into the event, my teammate and I would make a quick announcement about what we do as Title I teachers, why we picked the game of the night (strategic thinking, problem solving, etc), and how it connected to classroom learning. Food would be served, once the games were well underway or winding down.  Each game night lasted for one hour and we asked them to fill out a quick evaluation on their way out.  And many time we had something for them to take home with them: pad of paper to play pictionary at home, copy of a checker board, or subitizing card game.
Hitting the standards in a fun way

We also advertised a bit for the event by wearing our "Game On" shirts.  The kids would comment all day long..."Oh! Game night is tonight!"

The Impact
What we found is that families came!  Families had fun!  We had fun!  It was a great way to get to know families, interact with our students in a fun way, and share our learning standards in a creative, engaging way.  It did take me away one night a month from my family.  So they came to me and played along.

The Cost
Honestly, the cost was not bad at all.  For the games, we asked for donations from staff.  Old puzzles, board games, or large pads of paper for Pictionary were all donated.  We also found some at garage sales.  The checkers boards were just printed off on cardstock with two colored counters. And the math games were just the games we were already using in the classrooms.
Most of our cost came from the food.  So we got very creative.  I watched for sales on pasta, macaroni and cheese, or bags of pretzels.  We picked foods that would serve many.  Because of this, we were able to feed a lot of people for a very small price.

Game Nights are going to occur again this year.  My teammate and I loved them!  We looked forward to them every month because they were just a lot of fun.  I have created a small pack for you, in case you would like to host one game night or many!  It includes the invitation, bracelets, and raffle tickets.

Are there any ways that you engage families that you really enjoy?  I would love to add them to my toolbox!

Oh So Thankful

I am sure this is a tradition for many.  But each year my family states what they are thankful for before we eat our Thanksgiving meal.  I tend to always say the same thing.  "I am thankful for my family and my health."
And it is the truth.  I am thankful for those things.  100%.

After I saw this link up this morning, I thought about it all day.

Last Thanksgiving my grandma passed away.  She lived next door to me.  I was sad when she died, of course, but I was grateful that I had spent time with her.  I had 35 years of shopping, sleepovers, vacations, and conversation.  I had memories.  As I grieved and reflected on the time that I spent with her, I realized that this was something to be truly grateful for.

What am I thankful for this year?

Time.

Time to spend with my two little girls cuddled up on couch reading together, snuggling together watching a movie, or running around in the yard.

Time with my Ben to talk and continue to grow the relationship that we have together.

Time to visit the library and then gather with my family at Dewey's for pizza every Wednesday night.

Time to go to the Art Museum on a Saturday afternoon, take a weekend to hike, swim each Tuesday during the summer with friends, or impromptu roller coaster riding.

Time to nurture friendships with blogging buddies that mean so much to me but live afar.

Time with friends to chat, shop, or eat without children.

Time to spend with my teammates because they inspire, support, and energize my teaching heart.

Time at school to breathe a little and share the duties and responsibilities that I have always liked to put on only myself.

Time that I have allowed for myself to read, puzzle, or just sit.

And finally...time to provide a wide variety of experiences to my girls.

Although I am 100% grateful for the health and family that I have had this year, I am especially thankful for the time that I get with them.  Because this is what I have right now and I want to do my best to make the most of it.

What are you most grateful for this year?  Please comment or link up with Jennifer!

A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That

Jun 23, 2015

Summer days have been flying by!  We've done a little of This.....

We have spent a *few* days at KI since it's only about 4 miles from our house.  We've had several first ride celebrations now that all our girls have grown.  Our oldest is 52 inches so she can ride the Banshee at Kings Island!  The second to  last picture is of her first ride.... IN THE FRONT SEAT! (NO... I did not ride with her, I'm not that crazy!) Our middle just rode Congo Falls for the first time AND she's now able to ride The Beastie (or The Woodstock Express if you want it's for real name) by herself!!! Our youngest LOVES Shake, Rattle and Roll (it's my favorite too!).
On her first ride, in flight she said, "I can touch God!" It was the sweetest thing!

Now for a Little Bit of That.....

We played Footgolf, impromptu picnics under the tree, walking our neighbor's dog, and the American Ninja Warrior Park. hahaha  It's just a park that has lots of obstacles so that's what we like to call it. :)

And a WHOLE Lot of Tennis, Tee Ball, Softball, Golf, Swimming, ......

I L.O.V.E. being a teacher mom!  I get the best of both worlds.  I'm blessed to be able to work with all our firsties and help them achieve their dreams of being authors.  But then when school is over, I get to go home and watch how my girls are being the author's of their own stories.  It's interesting to see the chapters unfold as they are each choosing different paths.  Paths that have led each of them to find joy and happiness, new friendships, and new adventures.  At the beginning of this year I chose One Little Word.  Author. I'm not sure I'm doing a great job authoring my own story, but sometimes watching the story in front of you unfold through a child's eyes is much better than the one you could write on your own.

Catch Up, Catch Up

Jun 12, 2014

It's been a long time since I've posted about what's been going on in our life.  We've had a pretty emotional last few months.  Actually... it feels like it's been the last year for myself.  Last year I lost my grandma and since then it's felt like there was always a dark cloud over me.  I couldn't get motivated to blog, create, pinterest, or blog stalk like I had been.  I know... I couldn't even get motivated to Pinterest!  Lots of things became less important to me.  There have been lots of great things going on with us, but it always felt like there was always something looming over me.  Have you ever felt that way?

Then, my close friend that I coached with passed away unexpectedly.  He was healthy.  He was jogging.  Had a heart attack.  I cried for a week.  I didn't know what to do or how to get out of it.  My teaching buddies... I can't thank them enough.  Em was there for me during lunches to chat.  Karen let me cry it out and question everything.  Natalie and Lauren let me talk and cry.  So supportive.  Another great blogging friend let me cry, scream and question. She put everything in perspective and grounded my strong feelings. Thanks so much Jenny!

So, a few weeks ago, the sun started shining again. I stopped crying.  Turned another year older, had knee surgery (so I can FINALLY run again) and celebrated a few great things with my girls.  It is my hope that life is back to as normal as normal can be with three ladies in the house. :)

Here are a few pictures to catch you up.  :)

The first "real" picture our youngest has drawn. :)

Easter Egg Hunt at my sister's house.

Our oldest celebrated her First Communion.  The dress she wore was worn by my mom 57 YEARS AGO!  I also wore it as well as my 5 other sisters.  It reminds me of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants because we are all shapes and sizes and it fit us all! :)  She also wore my wedding veil.

Our youngest finally got her Kings Island Pass!  And almost everyone moved up in their height. :)  Lots of growing going on in this family, BUT I'm thankful NONE of us (well... children anyway) are tall enough for the Banshee yet.  I'm not ready to stomach that coaster yet.

We've hung around at the park, built forts, had puppet shows and went to story time with Em's girls and my niece with the princesses. :)  It was cute.  I think they were high school girls, but they were super cute and sang wonderfully!

Finally this little lady finished Kindergarten.  I'm so, so, so proud of her. Love that outfit!
I tried to talk her out of it, but she wanted to wear red on red.  She actually had on capris that were pink and white striped.  She rolled them up under her skirt.  Should I be worried?

Thanks for sticking with me.  It is my hope to blog, create and share lots more because we have a lot of great stuff going on friends! :)

I'd love to hear what you've been up to!

A Cape Please??!!!???

Sep 4, 2013

Right now I wish I had one of these...
Our youngest is all about being "SUPER GIRL".  She wears her super girl shirt every.other.day. Seriously.  My hubby does all the laundry... quickly.  So today she wore this. Thanks EM!
And tomorrow she will wear a blue super girl shirt.  And every day, when we get home she puts on the cape she was given for her birthday from our sitter.  :)
Right now, I need one because I have a HA-UGE stack of writing screeners to score and I'm blogging...... :)  Maybe if I wore one of these headbands I would be able to get more focused.  Pirates can do anything.
Or maybe I should put on a face like this.....
Finally, I will leave you with the first lost tooth in our house.  :)
